Introducing The Best Bedroom Positions, According To Doctors And Sexologists

“Trust me, I’m a doctor.” It’s an old trope you’ll hear in plenty of medical TV dramas — but if you’re looking for a new sex position to try with your lady, you just might want to take a doctor up on the advice they’re asking you to trust them with.

Today, working as a sexual health expert, sexologist or sex educator are professions that are becoming frequently more common. Why is that, you ask? The more research that gets conducted on human anatomy and male and female pleasure, the more job opportunities there are for field experts who take these findings and educate the masses on how to up their bedroom skills and incite more orgasms everywhere. I don’t know about you, but that’s definitely a cause I can get behind. Or in front of. Or on top of.

We asked a few experts to tell us their favorite sex position — why it’s awesome, what it’s best for and how to get the job done. Here are their top recommendations for the most pleasurable positions to explore with your partner tonight. You’re welcome.

1. The Lotus

Best for: Increasing intimacy

Why it’s awesome: “The Lotus sex position is one of the best ways to increase intimacy and pleasure in the bedroom,” says Caleb Backe, health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics. “Although it requires a decent amount of flexibility, it’s still relatively easy and can help you last longer in bed.” Bonus points for your partner: this position also feels extra good for her. “The Lotus position relies on grinding instead of in and out thrusting, which prolongs orgasming and focuses on clitoral stimulation for her,” he explains.

How to do it: Sit with your legs crossed while she faces and straddles you, wrapping her legs around your waist. “This allows both partners to have control of the speed, tempo and motion,” says Backe.

2. Dominant Standing Doggy

Best for: Experimenting with dominance play

Why it’s awesome: “This sex position is particularly special because it can fulfill fantasies for both partners,” says Backe. You get to act out your control urges, while your lady gets to feel dominated — without having to pull out any gear.

How to do it: “The light-bondage position is achieved by having the male partner standing behind the woman, allowing for both anal or vaginal penetration,” Backe explains. “The woman bends over, with her chest parallel to the ground and her hands held behind her back.”

3. The Spoon

Best for: Lazy morning sex

Why it’s awesome: Any position that lets you cuddle and get laid with little effort is a win in our book. “This position is great for a number of reasons,” says Men’s Pharmacy sexual health expert Kyle Sowden. “Firstly, both partners can control the depth and angle of penetration, as well as the pace of intercourse. It’s easy to change into another position from the ‘spoon.’ Additionally, there are also plenty of variations from the orthodox spooning position. With this position, you are more physically connected and intimate on an emotional level.” Pro tip: the spot also frees up your hands, and the clitoris is conveniently right within reach.

How to do it: Lay horizontally behind your lady and enter her from the rear.

4. Coital Alignment Technique

Best for: Getting her off

Why it’s awesome: It’s lots of added pleasure for her, with just a slight shift on your part. “Any position where you can employ the coital alignment technique (CAT) would be one of my favorites,” says Dr. Jennifer Landa of BodyLogicMD. “For those who don’t know what it is, it’s usually a riff on missionary, specifically used to increase clitoral stimulation.”

How to do it: “The guy positions himself so that his pubic bone ‘grinds’ into her clitoral area when he reaches the pinnacle of his stroke,” she explains. “To achieve this, he is usually slightly higher than the woman so that his pubic bone is above the spot where he might normally be in missionary. The woman should also do a pelvic tilt at the height of the thrust to increase the stimulation. The guy can also combine this with a stirring type motion where he moves his pubic bone on her clitoris in a circular motion.”

5. Missionary

Best for: Getting creative

Why it’s awesome: Multiple doctors and experts expressed their enthusiasm for missionary — mainly, the fact that it opens doors for plenty of pleasurable variations. “Missionary gets a bad rap, but for me it’s (one) of my favorite sex positions,” says Dr. Emily Morse, sexologist and host of the podcast and SiriusXM Radio show, Sex With Emily. “You can easily mix up missionary by getting creative with leg positions.” Laurel House, dating coach and resident sex expert for My First Blush echoes this sentiment. “Missionary is the most physically connected position that can give incredibly intense orgasms,” she says.

How to do it: You know the drill: She lays down, you take the driver’s seat and get on top. But from there, the possibilities are endless. “Move your legs wide or closer together or place a pillow under her butt to shift the angle — allowing for easier G-spot access,” says Dr. Morse. “It’s also the perfect position to use a toy, like the we-vibe touch, for extra clitoral stimulation.” Missionary gives you easy access to whisper something dirty in her ear, House adds.

6. Reverse Cowgirl

Best for: Seeing all of her

Why it’s awesome: You get your own personal show, and she gets to call the shots. “Women tend to move slower and enjoy the ride, while most men are way too likely to do the old wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am, roll-over-and-go-to-sleep routine,” says John Wilder, marriage, relationship and sexual coach. “In this position, she can put a vibrator between her legs and have multiple orgasms.”

How to do it: The classic reverse cowgirl has you lying down with her facing away from you, lowering herself onto and off your member — but Wilder says trying it in a chair can take this position to the next level. “Sitting in a chair, you can fondle her breasts, kiss the back of her neck and stroke her hair, giving her multiple sensory inputs for more pleasure,” he says.
