Never Have I Ever: Gotten My Penis Pierced

Here’s What It’s Really Like to Get the Infamous ‘Prince Albert’ Piercing Down There
Have you ever played “Never Have I Ever” before? Here are the rules: Everyone puts up ten fingers, and you go around in a circle and one by one share something sexy or scandalous that you’ve never done before. When someone else shares something you have done, you have to put one finger down — and of course, drink. The first person to put all 10 fingers down loses (or wins, depending on how you look at it).
Well, AskMen is still playing Never Have I Ever, and the rules are simple: In each edition of this column, we speak to someone about doing something new in bed, whether it’s a long-time fantasy, something that just happened, or even something they regret. They tell us everything so you get an inside look at what some sexual experiences are actually like.
Though most of the guys searching to alter their member are looking to increase their size, there are a lot of ways to modify your penis — including piercings.
I was chatting with my friend InjectorChris — who’s talked with AskMen before about the rise in penis and scrotum fillers — and he mentioned that some of his patients might come to him for further modification after falling in love with what needles can do to the region through piercings. He introduced me to his friend, Michael, a 33-year-old gay man living in New York City.
Michael began with the tradition of getting a yearly piercing, beginning with his ears and nose. Last year, he decided that he was feeling brave enough to decorate his dick with a Prince Albert piercing.
The Prince Albert piercing is a genital piercing that passes through the urethra and exits through the underside of the glans, aka head, of the penis. The name “Prince Albert” is often attributed to Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. It’s not historically documented, but there’s a very long-standing rumor that Prince Albert himself had this piercing. Hence, it carries on his namesake. Probably not the legacy the royal expected, but there you go.
As Michael learned when he had to step back from sex for a month, a Prince Albert piercing can take up to four to six weeks to heal. However, when it’s done, you’re left with a pretty, somewhat kinky body modification.
Michael jumped on the phone with AskMen to talk about how getting a penis piercing compared to his later experience with penis fillers (which one do you guess had a longer healing time?), how his partners reacted, and whether he’d get one again. Keep reading.
AskMen: Before you got a penis piercing yourself, what were your thoughts about them?
Michael: I’ve always thought that they’re pretty cool and interesting. Whenever I would come across one, it definitely struck my mind in an intriguing sort of fashion. I’ve always been uniquely attracted to them and like that.
I pierced my ear and nose; it was like a once-a-year trend where I would pierce something else. So towards the end of last year, I was just, like, you know what? Why not do it? It’s my birthday and the holidays. Just go for it.
I’ve always loved aesthetic services. I saw some articles which really pushed me and gave me the confidence that I needed, which led me into doing things like scrotum and penis filler.
Regarding needles, how did the experience of getting a penis piercing compare to penis filler?
I honestly would think the penis filler was easier. The needle aspects in either weren’t really bad. For this piercing itself, the cleaning was like the worst part. With the penis filler, you honestly don’t even really notice it. You get it done, and then it’s like, it’s over, but piercings, you have to clean, you have to wait for it to heal.
What was the experience of getting the penis piercing like?
I ended up going to the same parlor where I got my nose done. I had a friend come with me for the camaraderie of it all. It was really nice and the piercer was super knowledgeable. We kind of went over anatomy, where it’s going to be placed, sizing, and what kind of jewelry we’re going to do.
The actual procedure began with using a cotton swab to clean the urethra. Then from there, she was like, “One, two, three!” and then [the needle] just like, went in and out, and it was done.
Overall, the process took, maybe like, 20 minutes. It really wasn’t that bad.
What piercing do you have?
I have a Prince Albert. I originally thought I wanted an open one [circular barbell], but it was getting snagged a bit, so I have a closed [captive ring] one now. And I like that a lot more.
So how has it impacted your sex life?
It’s definitely a conversation starter. Some people are a little iffy about it, but it’s super easy to remove. Most of the time, I find that guys are intrigued by it. And then, a couple of times, people are a little freaked out by it! But I think if anything, they are definitely more excited because you don’t see it terribly often.
Would you get another one, or do any more body mods?
In the piercing space, probably not. I’m thinking about going back for one more round of penis filler, but in terms of jewelry, probably not.
And what advice would you have for someone who’s considering getting a piercing?
Definitely do research on the place you’re going to. Make sure it looks clean, make sure they answer your questions, and that you’re comfortable. And be prepared for the healing process. There is a bit of sexual downtime. I probably waited like a month and a half.
How did the piercing live up to your expectations?
The only challenging aspect was finding the right jewelry. Had I known in the beginning, I wouldn’t have gone with the closed loop. I actually like the way it looks a lot better.
It lives up to the fantasy that I built in my head. It looks very cool but it doesn’t impact function or anything. It does enhance stimulation. So, I would say it definitely lives up to the fantasy.
