When is National Hugging Day and How Many Hugs Do We Need a Day?
Last updated:January 24, 2023
Hugging can be a great tool that you and those you love can reap benefits from. If you’re doing it with your lover, it can even lead to making love and “special hugs” for the parents out there!
When Is National Hugging Day?
National Hugging Day falls on January 21 and is dedicated to encouraging people to hug (with consent as not to breach their personal space).
Why Do People Hug?
Hugs can be a powerful tool to express support and comfort. Not only do they have mental benefits, but they can also improve physical aspects of your health, since mental and physical health are directly related. Hugs have the potential to do things like:
Boost the immune system
Lower blood pressure
Decrease depression
Release oxytocin and serotonin
Improves relationship bonds
Increase self-esteem
How Many Hugs Do We Need a Day?
Since hugs can directly affect your health, it comes as no surprise that most humans desire them on a frequent basis. So, how much is enough? Family therapist Virginia Satir says “We need 4 hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.”
And since the past year has been a weird one, why not toss in a couple of extra. But, like always, make sure it’s consensual before you go wrapping your arms around someone. There are many ways to support someone in their time of need!
What Is a “Special Hug”?
A “special hug” refers to the term parents often use with their children when they walk in on them having sex. This is because sex often mimics the gesture of a hug, especially in the missionary position. If you ever find yourself in the sticky situation of your kids walking in on you, there are a few tips to keep in mind, like being honest but age-appropriate. There is no perfect time to give your offspring “the talk”, but special hugs happen and can be an opportunity to do so.
How Many “Special Hugs” Do We Need (aka How Much Sex Do We Need)?
The answer, of course, is that it depends. There are so many factors that influence our sex lives, like our personal belief systems, age, desires, past trauma… the list goes on. The 20-30 year-old age group seems to be having the most sex, but it makes sense that research shows that the more we take on, like work, children, and marriage, decreases our sexual inhibitions over time. Regardless, having sex once per week is a standard measure (although having sex everyday is still healthy!).
If you’re looking for ways to increase your libido or have more sex, try:
roleplaying or acting out your fantasies
incorporating a sex toy into solo or partnered play
adding a third partner into the mix
testing out some fun sex positions
engaging in more pillow talk
