If you like being in control, there are ways to make receiving a blowjob feel more dynamic; if you prefer your partner to be the one in control, there are ways to make a blow job feel more like you’re being dominated. The same applies if you’re the one giving a blowjob, too.

No matter what type of blowjob you and your partner want to engage in (or how much time and space you have to play with), there’s something for everyone.

How Changing the Position Affects a Blowjob

If you know about blowjobs from watching porn, you might have a relatively limited understanding of how many different positions blowjobs can come in.

In mainstream pornography, nearly every blowjob has the person receiving while standing up and the blowjob giver kneeling. But the only real limit to what a blowjob can look like is your imagination (and what your bodies can pull off).

With that in mind, it’s worth trying different blowjob positions out, especially considering changing the position can radically change how the blowjob feels for both giver and receiver.

“While your physical position alone doesn’t automatically determine the tone and feeling of a blowjob, it definitely plays a big part,” says Kayla Lords, a sexpert for JackAndJillAdult.com and founder of LovingBDSM.net. “A partner on their knees, looking up at you, can denote submission. Being on top during a 69 can indicate a level of power. Bending over your body while you’re tied up in the bed, unable to move, is all about power. To change the dynamics of a blowjob, try changing the position.”

Blowjob Positions for Guys Who Like to Be in Control

As blowjobs are a much less active form of sex compared to penetration, guys who like to be in control during sex might have difficulty properly enjoying them. However, some blowjob positions put more control back in the receiver’s hands as opposed to the giver — for instance, a standing blowjob where you’re putting your hands on your partner’s head.

“Standing with your hands on the back of your partner’s head might make you feel as though you’re in control,” says Jessica O’Reilly, PhD., host of the Drive Him Wild With Pleasure Video Course. “Position changes can also affect the physical pleasure you experience. Some partners will appreciate it if you put some gentle pressure on their head to guide their speed, rhythm and depth, while others would prefer that they maintain control. You can still place your hands on their head to play with power, even if you don’t guide their movements.”

Lords agrees that touching your partner’s head with your hands during the blowjob can be a great way to assert some dominance.

“Do not move their head back and forth without consent,” she advises. “Even the subtle promise or threat that you might hold their head still, or move their head during the blowjob, indicates that you’re in control of the situation.”

A more extreme way to do this? Face-f*cking, the act in which you hold your partner’s head around crotch level and penetrate their mouth. This could be done in a number of different ways: standing, with your partner kneeling in front of you, kneeling, with your partner crouching down in front of you or with your partner lying on their back, while you kneel around their shoulders.

Another option, for those who are a little more on the kinky side, is full-on throat-f*cking, according to Lords. This isn’t for everyone, and shouldn’t be attempted by couples unless both partners are relatively experienced and consent to it.

“Ask your partner to lie on their back with their head at the edge — of the bed, couch, table, or wherever you’re getting a blowjob,” she describes. “Pick a spot that puts their head at a similar height to your pelvis. Hold the side of their neck or face as you penetrate their mouth. If you enjoy erotic choking or breath play, discuss this before you squeeze their neck or block their nose during this position. This position mimics the act of penetrative (vaginal or anal) sex and leaves the rest of their body open to your touch and attention.”

If your partner isn’t totally comfortable with having their throat penetrated, or doesn’t want your hands on their head during the blowjob, another good option for dominant guys is a perpendicular blowjob. Here, someone kneels down next to the guy at a roughly 90-degree angle, allowing him to reach back and stimulate them manually while receiving the blowjob.

Unlike a 69, this isn’t exactly an equal give-and-take situation. It also means you can watch the blowjob happen, which is harder (if not impossible) to do during a 69.

But if you like to be submissive, what does your dream blowjob look like then?

According to O’Reilly, a 69-style position where your partner plants their butt in your face (for you to play with or simply to be dominated by) can be great for more submissive guys.

“Lie on your back and let your partner straddle you with their butt in your face,” she says. “You can enjoy feeling smothered and submissive in this position.”

For Lords, a great option is getting a little BDSM-style kinky by letting yourself be tied up.

“Anything involving bondage leaves you vulnerable to the power and control of your partner,” she says. “So if you want to feel submissive, let yourself be tied up and unable to move.”

Of course, if you don’t have a bed to play with, or your partner finds it sexier to go down on you while you’re standing, there’s also a way to make it more submissive-friendly.

“A partner being on their knees doesn’t automatically mean they’re submissive and you’re in control,” notes Lords. “If you keep your hands behind your back or at your side and stand still while your partner is one their knees, you’ve easily given up a certain amount of control without changing from a ‘typical’ position. Knowing your partner can do what they want with their tongue and mouth, and you won’t make a move to stop them, definitely makes you the one with less control over the situation.”

Blowjob Positions for a Furtive/Quickie-Style

Sometimes, the best blowjobs take place in public (or semi-public) situations. Whether you’re in a car, a forest, a bathroom or somewhere similar, those kinds of blowjobs will naturally require slightly different positions.

“If you’re looking to get away with a quickie, any position in which you can also use your hands may be ideal,” says O’Reilly. “Hands can provide more pressure and a more rhythmic stroke, so try working them into your blowjob.”

Here, the traditional kneeling/standing blowjob is probably a good fit, especially since most guys can undo their fly and/or pull their pants down for relatively easy access without needing to disrobe in any real way.

“On your knees, as close as possible, in a tight space is great for a captured moment — especially when you don’t want to get caught,” says Lords. “Hide in a closet, go into the bathroom stall, wherever you can both squeeze into a tight space.”

Another option could have both of you sitting, particularly useful in a car or a movie theater.

“Don’t lie on your back, as this can make it difficult for your partner to use their hands without engaging their core,” says O’Reilly. “Instead, sit up against the headboard or sit in a chair. Better yet, stand next to the bed or a chair so your partner can sit down and use both their hands and mouth.”

What about when you’re not in a hurry? What about when you’re in bed together with no place to go, and you want to have the best blowjob ever?

A great option for that situation is a classic: the blowjob receiver lies on his back with his partner between his legs. It’s a great opportunity to stretch out — the receiver doesn’t need to do anything at all, but can still hold his partner’s head (or play with their nipples) if he likes to have a bit more of an active role.
