My partner and I have been together a year now and have had the talk about settling down and having a family.
But when I explained my medical condition could be passed on to the child and we’d have to see a genetics counsellor, he just laughed and started cracking jokes.
He said he would love a special child, so why bother seeing an expert?
I was hugely offended by this, as I really don’t find it a joking matter. Now I don’t even know how I feel about our relationship.
Do I really want to settle down with someone as childish as this? Or am I overreacting?

I think he was perhaps over-compensating and trying to make you feel better about the situation, and prove that he’ll love you no matter what.
He probably didn’t really know how to react and so he’s just said the wrong thing. Or maybe he just assumes it won’t happen to you.
I think you need to talk about it more and explain how you feel because, obviously, it is a serious subject.
If you really want to have a baby, then you’re doing the right thing seeing a geneticist and a counsellor.
It’s important to go into it with your eyes open and be informed about all the possibilities and options.
Maybe when your boyfriend understands the condition and the implications a bit better, he’ll be on board.
