Anal beads seem—how should I say this?—kinda scary. They look kind of like rosary beads, except chunkier, and instead of praying with them, you put them in your butt. But despite their intimidating design, anal beads are a great way to get prostate or anal stimulation, and they feel a little different than butt plugs and prostate massagers. Plus, you can use ’em for a fun interactive experience with a partner (more on that later).
I haven’t used anal beads in a while—I go through waves of using different sex toys, and am currently all about my LELO Hugo Prostate Massager—but there was a time when anal beads were my weapon of choice. Nothing against butt plugs, but they’re either in, or they’re out. With anal beads, you can play with how much you insert, and you can hit certain spots inside that most other sex toys can’t reach. Personally, I also find it arousing—both physically and psychologically—to have someone pull them out of me. Every time a ball “pops” out, it feels intense, but in a good way.
Want to learn more about anal beads? I enlisted the help of Sammi Cole, sex expert at Lovehoney, to explain everything there is to know about the sex toy.
What are anal beads, and how do you use them?
“Anal beads are a sex toy that offer a great way to get your body used to anal stimulation,” Cole says. Typically, they’re a series of graduated, conjoined spherical beads with a flared loop or handle at the end, so they don’t get lost up there. (Remember: Make sure your toy has a flared base if you’re putting it up your butt!) Anal beads can be slowly inserted into the anus to stimulate your internal erogenous zones, Cole explains. For people who have a prostate, this internal stimulation can feel extra amazing.
You can have anal beads inside you while masturbating, receiving oral, or having penetrative sex. You can also use them to train yourself (i.e., loosen your anus) for bigger things, like pegging. “They offer a gradual ‘filling’ feeling that many people find pleasurable, plus the slim neck between each bead creates a ‘popping’ sensation as they’re inserted and removed,” Cole explains.
For even greater pleasure, Cole recommends slowly pulling the beads out at the moment of orgasm. It can also be hot to have your partner play with your anal beads, so they’re the one controlling how many beads are inside of you. Like with any type of anal play, you want to use a ton of lube, Cole says. “Listen to your body, and if anything hurts, stop. Anal play can be very pleasurable when you relax, but you should never feel like you have to ‘push through’ the pain.”
What are they typically made out of?
“Anal beads can be made of lots of different sex toy materials, but the most common kinds are made from silicone, plastic, PVC, or other flexible materials,” Cole says. Note that when you use anal beads made of silicone, you can’t lubricate them using silicone lube (which is often used for anal play), because it will erode the toy. Use a water-based lube instead.

Who should use anal beads?
Anyone who’s interested in trying them out! Anal beads can be used by anyone, regardless of gender, sexual preference, or experience level, Cole explains.
How do anal beads differ from butt plugs and prostate massagers?
Butt plugs, you put in and leave in during masturbation or sex. (I also know guys who just like the sensation of having them in, so they live their merry lives with them inside while going to work and whatnot.) Having them in during sex often leads to stronger and more earth-shattering ejaculations.
Prostate massagers really focus on hitting the prostate, specifically. That’s why they’re typically 3 or so inches in length, and curve at the end. Some prostate massagers you can move in and out, but most, you want to let sit comfortably inside of you.
With anal beads, the pleasure is derived from the sensation of being filled gradually, and then experiencing that euphoric release as each bead gets pulled out. In that regard, anal beads are more “active.” There’s more movement involved.
How do I clean my anal beads?
As with anything you put inside you or your partner, you should clean your anal beads throughly in between uses. “Cleaning it prevents bacteria [from] building, which can cause nasty infections,” Cole says.
To clean them, just go ahead and wash under warm water with soap. You can let them air dry. You don’t need a special cleaning product or device.
What are the best anal buys to buy?
When it comes to separating low-quality and high-quality anal beads, the key is in the material you choose. “Silicone is a wonderful choice for anal beads, because the material is non-porous (making cleaning easier and more effective), and it’s soft enough to keep you comfortable while still firm enough to make penetration easy,” Cole says. For safety reasons, you obviously want to look for beads with a ring loop or flared base.
Last but not least, here are some of Cole’s anal bead recommendations:
