Dear Coleen: I’ve never been in love but could new man change that?

Dear Coleen

My problem is that at 22, I’ve never been in love with anyone, I haven’t been heartbroken and don’t really see the point in .

However, now I’ve met a man with whom I feel I could progress with and build a future. He has had previous relationships but, like me, never formed any serious attachments or been in love.

Our personalities are actually very similar – do you think it could go somewhere, even though I don’t seem to be the type of person to form attachments?

What should I do?

Coleen says

It’s not unusual that at 22 you haven’t been in love. And I don’t think you have to do anything – things will either happen organically or they won’t. Falling in love isn’t something you can force.

But maybe this is your time to open up and let someone in. This man might not turn out to be The One, but at the very least he’s made you realise that you could form an attachment.

I would enjoy what you have at the moment and see where it takes you. There could be underlying why you’re stopping from getting close to and opening up emotionally, so give it some thought.

Or it could simply be that you haven’t met the right person yet.
