The painful and itchy condition can occur in women of all ages, but those going through the menopause are more likely to be affected.

This is because the body produces less oestrogen than normal, which has a knock on effect on how the vaginal wall behaves.

Vaginal atrophy is also common in women being treated for certain cancers.

According to Mayo Clinic, top risk factors for the condition include smoking, a lack of vaginal births and no sexual activity.

“Sexual activity, with or without a partner, increases blood flow and makes your vaginal tissues more elastic,” the site reads.

In fact, Dr Nicole Prause, who runs a sex lab Liberos in the US, has been exploring the science behind climaxing for almost a decade.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Star Online, she revealed more about the health benefits of orgasms.

She said: “Continued sexual activity has been associated with better neuropsychological tests, specifically number sequencing and recall, suggesting that sexual activity may have the potential to improve or preserve cognitive functions.
